Bandai's Tamagotchi Original brings back the 1997 virtual pet with its original programming: feed it, play with it, clean up after it, give it medicine and discipline it, then watch it grow from an egg to one of seven adult characters depending on the care it gets. It includes the original Character game, comes on a chain to clip to a bag, and ships with its CR2032 battery. This shell is Pretty Party; the listing says ages 8 and up. Rated 4.6 across more than 10,000 reviews on Amazon US, at about $20.
Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A teen or tween who likes retro things and wants something to look after between classes.
Best occasion : Christmas stocking, or a birthday surprise for a 12- to 15-year-old.
Why it works : Teens know the Tamagotchi as a retro icon their parents talk about, and keeping one alive over winter break is a running joke and a small responsibility at once; it fits in a stocking and gets switched on before breakfast.
Avoid if : The teen will be annoyed by beeps at night: the pet needs attention several times a day.
