How we choose and rank gifts

ChooseTheGift is an independent gift-recommendation site. We do not sell anything: every product links to Amazon, which pays us a commission at no extra cost to you. This page explains what goes into our 41 guides and 799 product pages, so you can judge our picks for yourself.

1. Only real gifts

A product enters the catalogue only if someone would be glad to receive it for a birthday or Christmas. Tools, cleaning and maintenance products, consumables, practical lighting and plain household equipment are refused, however well rated. Alcohol, tobacco, sexual content and vulgar items are excluded without exception. Each guide also has a written scope: the audience it serves, its theme, and what does not belong in it.

2. Verified data, refreshed automatically

Ratings, review counts, prices and availability come from Amazon's own data and are checked automatically every day. Every rating you see is the real one at the time of the last check. Prices are shown as indicative because they change often; a product that becomes unavailable is withdrawn from the guides and its page is marked accordingly.

3. A gift score, not a sales score

Popularity alone pushes forward useful but unexciting objects. So each ranked product also receives a gift score on four questions, asked for the audience of the guide: does it bring real pleasure when unwrapped, does it surprise, is it current rather than dated, and is the perceived value above its price. The final order combines this gift score (55%), reliability from ratings and review volume (25%) and editorial criteria such as originality and value for money (20%). The score stays internal; we never display it as a number.

4. One product per type, varied budgets

A guide lists 12 to 15 products with one product per kind of object, so a reader compares real alternatives rather than three versions of the same thing. Each guide spans several price bands, from small gifts to one or two splurges, and opens with a short answer naming the top picks so that the recommendation is clear before the list.

5. Corrections

If you spot a wrong price, an unavailable product or a pick that does not belong in a guide, write to [email protected]. Corrections are applied in the next update, and each guide shows its last update date.
