Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A beginner, or a returning player, who wants a full 88-key instrument for a living room or bedroom.
Best occasion : Christmas, a milestone birthday.
Why it works : A real 88-key piano is the kind of gift a family chips in for, because few people buy one for themselves on a whim. Headphone playing and a quiet keyboard action make it workable in an apartment, and the Twin Piano mode suits a parent sitting next to a child at lessons. About $500, rated 4.5 across 1,757 reviews.
Avoid if : The recipient does not play or want lessons, or needs a stand and pedal: check the listing for what is in the box.
