Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A teen or adult who wants to start mixing at home and already has a laptop or phone to run it
Best occasion : Christmas, a milestone birthday
Why it works : This is a large present that opens a new hobby: the layout follows Pioneer DJ's pro gear, and the Smart Fader takes the hardest part of mixing, matching tempo, off a beginner. The pads for cues, effects and samples leave room to grow once the basics click. Rated 4.7 across 2,800+ reviews at $329.
Avoid if : They have no laptop, phone or speakers to connect: it is a controller, not a standalone player. Also pass if they want a club-style rig with more than two channels.
