✓ Product data checked October 23, 2026
The ATH-R50x is an open-back reference headphone from Audio-Technica, built for critical listening and audio production. Its drivers are modelled on the higher-end ATH-R70x, and the fully open back lets air move freely to avoid internal resonance, which gives a wide, natural soundstage. At 207 g with a redesigned headband, it is made for long sessions. The box includes two detachable twist-lock cables of 3 m and 1.2 m, a 6.3 mm adapter and a pouch. It makes a considered gift for someone who mixes music or simply listens closely at home, at around $170.
Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A home producer, podcaster or attentive music listener who works in a quiet room
Best occasion : Birthday, Christmas, a graduation in music or audio
Why it works : Reference headphones are an upgrade many hobby producers postpone; this pair comes from a studio brand, ships with two cable lengths and is light enough for hours of mixing.
Avoid if : The recipient listens on the go or in shared spaces: the open back lets sound in and out, and there is no wireless mode.
