It is listed for ages 3 to 8 and for up to three children playing together. Rated 4.7 across 2,600+ reviews on Amazon US at about $70.
Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A 3- or 4-year-old who likes laying track and acting out a town, and a family with more than one child to play
Best occasion : Christmas morning, a third or fourth birthday
Why it works : One box mixes three kinds of play: track layout, a small-town building set and a magnetic fishing game, so the gift is not used up in the first afternoon. Because the track is listed as compatible with other major wooden train brands, relatives can add to it later. Rated 4.7 across 2,600+ reviews at about $70.
Avoid if : The child is under 3, the lowest age on the listing, or floor space is tight: 110 separate pieces need room to be laid out and then picked up.
