Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A toddler between 1 and 5 who likes hitting, dropping and racing things, and an adult who wants a toy with several ways to play.
Best occasion : A first or second birthday, Christmas.
Why it works : One box gives two games, since balls and cars can run on the same three-level track. The hammer and the light-up balls reward a toddler's urge to hit and watch what happens. At about $33 and 4.6 stars across nearly 800 reviews, it is a mid-priced toy that can be shared between siblings.
Avoid if : The child is still putting everything in their mouth: the balls and mini cars are small, so the youngest toddlers need supervision. Our data does not give the number of pieces or the batteries required, so check the listing.
