Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A family with two or more kids who play outside, camp or hike together and want to stay in touch without phones
Best occasion : Christmas, for kids who spend the winter break at a park, a campsite or a big backyard
Why it works : A pack of four lets a small group play together out of the box instead of one pair being shared. The key lock keeps younger kids from changing channels by mistake, VOX allows talking without pressing a button, and the belt clips free their hands on a hike. More than 25,000 reviews at 4.5 stars show it works for a lot of families.
Avoid if : You need guaranteed range: the 1,000-meter figure applies to open areas only, and obstacles reduce it. The listing does not say how the sets are powered, so check the Amazon page for batteries before buying.
