It is a mid-priced option for hikers and nature watchers who want a compact pair.
Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A hiker or nature watcher who wants a compact pair of binoculars from a well-known optics brand
Best occasion : Christmas or a birthday for someone who spends time outdoors
Why it works : Binoculars are the kind of gift an outdoorsy person keeps for years, and this pair is described as waterproof, fogproof and rubber-armored in a compact 10x30 format. At about $137 it sits well below the premium Vortex Diamondback in this catalog while carrying the Nikon name. The 4.6 rating is based on only 134 reviews, so it is a less proven choice than the larger-volume picks.
Avoid if : The recipient wants the most light-gathering power for dawn or dusk viewing: a 42 mm objective gathers more light than a 30 mm. Skip it also if he or she rarely goes outdoors.
