Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A Super Mario Bros. Wonder fan aged 9 or older, or an adult collector, who wants a large set with a play feature.
Best occasion : A birthday or Christmas.
Why it works : It is the large, play-ready Mario build: Castle Bowser lifts off its stand to "fly", shoots fireballs and opens onto a cell for Prince Florian, so it works for play as well as for display. At over 12.5 inches high and 1,251 pieces, it is a gift that takes real time to build.
Avoid if : Your budget is under $100, or you expect Mario in the box: the interactive LEGO Mario, Luigi and Peach figures are sold separately, and the app features need a compatible device.
