Pros and cons

What we like

  • Builds two plants, a tall dracaena and a pilea seedling
  • Made for ages 9 and up, so teens and adults can build it too
  • Needs no water or sunlight, unlike a real houseplant
  • Displays in a bedroom, living room or on an office desk

What may bother

  • It takes a building session before anything is ready to display
  • Two plants only, so a fuller display means collecting more sets
  • Brick plants collect dust and need an occasional wipe

Our verdict

90 / 100

The question is whether the person likes to build. If yes, this is a tidy present for a teen, a plant-loving friend or a coworker's desk. If they want instant decor, choose something that comes assembled.

Best forTeens and adults who like building at their own pace and want some green on a desk or shelf without caring for a living plant.
Avoid ifSkip it if the person wants an instant decoration or has no interest in building sets.

How we score

The CTG score out of 100 is the weighted average of five criteria rated for every product: proven reliability (36%), perceived value (18%), bond and memory (18%), originality (14%) and novelty (14%). Each criterion has its own published scale, identical for every product: it rates generously, because every product in our selection is already good. The score does not depend on the guide. 60 to 69: average gift. 70 to 77: good pick. 78 to 85: safe bet. 86 to 89: favorite. 90 and above: the perfect gift, a label reserved for excellent products that customers like, one winner per occasion. In a guide, the score for the recipient combines this score with the place in the ranking. The budget is an indicative range: the exact price is shown by the store at checkout.
