LEGO DUPLO My First Creative Vehicles (10474) has 42 large bricks and three wheelbases, made for toddlers from 18 months. The main models are a small car, a helicopter with a spinning rotor, a dump truck with a tipping bed and a fire truck with a hinged ladder. Children can pull them apart and recombine the bricks into new vehicles, such as a police car or a double-decker bus. The fire truck stands about 5 inches high. Around $20.
Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A toddler who loves cars, trucks and helicopters and is ready for a first building set
Best occasion : Christmas or a birthday from age 18 months
Why it works : Four finished models in one box means the child has vehicles to push around as soon as the first one is built, and pulling them apart to make new ones gives the set a second life that a single-model toy lacks. It is a first LEGO set a parent can hand over for around $20.
Avoid if : The child is under 18 months, the minimum age on the listing, or already builds with standard LEGO bricks.
