The LEGO Animal Crossing Blathers's Museum Collection (77056) rebuilds the museum from Nintendo's game around two minifigures, the owl Blathers and the frog Lily. Kids dig up a missing Triceratops tailbone with a spade, net fish for the aquarium and catch butterflies and bugs for the nature displays. The hinged walls can be rearranged, closed or left open, and the set adds a Roost café and a fountain. It has 543 pieces, is listed for ages 7 and up, and is rated 4.8 across 263 reviews at about $57.
Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A child aged 7 and up who plays Animal Crossing and likes to build, then arrange the scene.
Best occasion : A birthday or Christmas.
Why it works : The set is built around the museum of the Nintendo game, so a young player gets to do the things the listing names: dig for the Triceratops tailbone, net fish, catch butterflies. The hinged walls mean the layout keeps changing after the build, and the Roost café and fountain add small scenes to play out. Rated 4.8 across 263 reviews.
Avoid if : The child is under 7 or has never come across Animal Crossing: the characters and the museum only mean something to someone who knows the game. With 543 pieces, allow time for the build.
