Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A couple or small group that likes board games with simple rules and some strategy, and wants something new for game night.
Best occasion : Christmas, a birthday, a housewarming game night.
Why it works : The tile-placement idea is easy to explain, yet the 2018 Spiel des Jahres award on the listing signals a game that holds up over repeated plays. It runs 30 to 45 minutes, short enough for a weeknight. About $31.99, rated 4.8 across 16,696 reviews.
Avoid if : The recipient already owns Azul or only plays party games: this is a quiet strategy game, not a loud group one.
